18+ Student Oyster Card ?

Options
Nephew is off to London in the autumn for Uni - is it worth getting an 18+ Oyster card? He will live and study in the New Cross area (zone2?) and only expects occasion trips out of the area - maybe a couple of times a week but certainly not daily. I thought it would be a discount from all journeys but tfl website suggests it might not be worth getting one unless you have a daily commute?

£20 for 30% of travelcards and bus passes.

You need to do the calculations.

The other option is a 16-25 railcard, that will give you 34% discount on off peak fares. Either use it loaded to the student oyster card or take out an ordinary oyster card for £3 and load it to that.
