Makes me cross

As someone who is struggling now due to silly mistakes when they were young it made me so cross to see what I saw in the bank today.

I popped in to order a paying in book and there was an advisor talking to a young girl.

She was asking for an increased overdraft as she had just started Uni, he said no they don't offer this for students but then got her to complete an application for a credit card! She had previously told him that she didn't work

By the way I wasn't ear wigging this was all happening next to me in the queue and for the whole bank to hear.

    Hey sweetie,

    Oh I know!

My eldest son is now unemployed after leaving college and he gets bombarded with "pre approved" CC applications - and HSBC gave him a £2k overdraft without him even asking for one!

As for myself, I went into the bank to close out a loan account and they spent 45 minutes trying to sell me new product.

When I stood up to leave and asked them to post me the paperwork to close ALL my accounts with them instead as I was fed up with them wasting my time they finally produced the paper I had to sign.

And they're constantly ringing me asking me to come in for a chat.

It's enough to make you want to keep it under your mattress! :D

I found out recently that a friend of mine had to sell her house she married from brought her babies home too after religiously attending banks "chats" and following there advice - but boy did they pull the rug from under her when she was in trouble. Now she is renting and still owes them money -her house was purchased for 20k and she sold for 100k but thats how much they encouraged her to live - very sad but easy to be wise after - trouble is we trust banks.

    Or used to!
  • I think my local branch must be really good, as I have been in recently to close a loan account and fiddle with my OD and they didn't try to sell me anything!!!

Either they realise that I will not take anything or they have given up trying!!

But when I was a student they offered me all sorts, I took the OD and left the Credit card, which I am forever grateful for! I couldn't work out why they would let me have one when I didn't have any income!! It just shouldn't allowed and they wonder how people end up in debt

    The mind boggles!

It makes me made that banks just see us as punters to sell too, the number of times I've been in at lunchtime and there is a massive que but some one is trying to flog something to some one that keeps telling her she doesn't have the time, the only good thing about a basic bank account is that they dont try to flog you anything!

:rotfl: One of my 92 yo grandmothers keeps her savings all over the place.

She has wall to wall fitted cupboards in her bedroom and the doc suggested that all those sheets, blankets, quilts and table cloths were probably harbouring dustmites that were bad for her chest - but of course she won't part with any of it so every few months we haul it all off for a hot wash at the laundrette.

(and a few pieces don't come back - but :shhh: don't tell Nan!)

Anyway...we usually find bank notes stuffed inside pillowcases and all kinds of things.

And if you open the wrong biscuit or cracker tin you get a bit of a surprise as well. :D

Maybe she's got the right idea after all! :D

  • One of my mates used to work for a bank as a cashier and she said that she was given targets to meet for selling products, she said she was a cashier not a saleswoman and promptly found another job.

I constantly get information through the post like pre approved loans and credit card cheques and tbh this makes me pretty mad as most of my debt is all with this one bank and they should know I couldnt afford the repayments on a 8k loan!
