Handed my notice and now...

Hi,

I have finally handed my notice, my employer requires me to work 3 full months and now...

The company were I'm going faced some difficulties last year and now they are hiring people as they have restructured the business. I'm going for a role which I really like, reason I'm leaving my current job is cause I don't like what I do. The problem is that since I handed my notice everybody is telling me I'm heading to a business is going to close soon, they also told me that I can always change my mind.

I know I'm taking a risk but I don't know if people here really cares or they expect me to withdraw my notice.

Everybody? I could understand one person telling you "oh, that's the company that's on the rocks" and another person saying "I hope you'll reconsider" but this sounds more like lovebombing.

If they really wanted you to withdraw your notice they'd offer you a pay rise or promise action to sort out the issues that caused you to leave. Not try to pressure you or make you scared of joining another company.

Out of interest, are you working the full 3 months' notice and dropping the "probation" argument you mentioned in your previous thread?

Well by everybody I mean at the minute 3 different managers in one day.

And yeah about the probation I exposed my argument and they said that "no news means you passed your probation", I just don't want to leave in bad terms as everyone knows each other in my field.
Probably I should add that I'm going to a direct competitor, actually my new company struggled after losing a client to my current company.
  • They want you to stay from my previous experience on similar sentences.

Stuff said like this is definately said out of concern.
  • I think you may have been a little quick on your decision here.

You say that the business you are moving to nearly went out of business when one of its clients moved to your current employer. Have you considered why this is ? It may be that your current employer is actually a better business ?

It sounds to me like you know some of the managers there, and they have advised you not to go. Only you can decide whether this is because they genuinely have said this, or are trying to scare you from leaving.

Is there a significant reason for your move ?

I think you are lucky that you have 3 months to study the other business in depth before you leave. You have been told you can withdraw your notice...

Well my main reason is because I don't like my current role as it doesn't fit my previous experience and education, while the new role is something I really like and where I want to direct my career. Even if I would change my mind I would be too proud to withdraw my notice and stay in a job which I admitted I don't like, plus I had already signed my new contract, so I guess I would be legally bind either way.
  • Be careful when you walk up the path to the door, because behind it might not be the palace you think it will be.

Until you start worst case is the notice period in the new contract?

Does the current company have a role you would like to do?

You have 3 months to fix it and hope the new place is still around if you can't

If this is a small world sector where you plan a long term career you are right to be cautious of burning bridges, if you career development will benefit from the change then the current company needs to recognise that they need to offer something to match that o keep you.

Often companies benefit from people moving on gaining experience they can't currently offer, when they come back they are more valuable than if they stayed.

(Often an insight into the good things a competitor does).
