I'm not meant to be debt free...

So, I lurked for ages. I picked up lots of tips, had a bit of a lightbulb moment and sorted out my budgets. All was going well - for about three days.

Unfortunately, my oven's just packed in. No light, no heat, no tea. The fan had started to make a funny noise when I turned the oven on last week, but OH swore blind it had always made that noise. To paraphrase Spike Milligan, 'I told him it was ill!'

I suppose I did tempt fate by joining the party season challenge - disabling my oven is a sure way of making sure I stick to salad only!

Anyone got any suggestions on where to get a cheap built in one? Or where to bang it with a hammer to make it miraculously work again?

In other news, my car is due for a service. Had to get a new car in April as some little !!!! stole my beloved rover mini and set him on fire. My parents helped out so now I have an '02 corsa (god, I miss my mini).

The garage gave me a 1 year warranty, on condition I got the car serviced after 6.000 miles or 6 months, whichever came first. I have to get it serviced with them, and it costs £115.

Since April, I've done less than 3.000 miles. Do you reckon it's safe to skip the service (and use the money for an oven). I will lose the last 6 months of the warranty - I don't know what to do...

Any help/suggestions gratefully received!

Might you find an oven through the Freecycle site? Or,we bought a really cheap reconditioned one thinking it would do for a few months....six years ago! Found through local paper.

Sorry, meant to start by offering sympathy! Sometimes it really does feel as if every circumstance just is out to get you!

I kind of know this, but I just needed someone to give me permission!

I have such a bad history with cars, it's unbelievable (I added it all up once - the mini was towed to the garage on average once every 10 weeks!). I'm sure cars designed in the 21st century are probably more reliable :rotfl:

Oh, and Hypno - cheers :D it's all character buliding!

Many years ago as a single parent I had to replace my cooker because the fan went (beginning of my debt possibly, as I took out a loan!) Last year when my fan went, OH went on-line, bought the requisite part and replaced it. I said "where were you 10 years ago?" Well we, did know each other in those days, but I wouldn't have dreamt of asking him to mend my cooker. He'd have been perfectly willing and able, but he was just an aquaintance so I just didn't ask him. So now my suggestion is, talk aloud near friends and aquaintances, and maybe some sympathetic able person (male or female) will offer to help/show/do the repair. ;) Or you could come on here and someone might be able to explain how to do it :D OH would have loved to have been chivalrous to some maiden, any maiden. He still does :D

I'm very jealous! Last time my OH went into the kitchen (it's a rare occasion) he elctrocuted himself on the popcorn wotsit!

I'm going to attack the oven with my pink screwdriver and hammer. If all else fails, I'll just light a fire at the bottom and have an indoor bbq.

ohhhhh, I hate warranty's & those who push them.

If you stop to think about it? what does your warranty cover in the first year that your statutary rights would not? and what exactly does the warranty cover anyway? I guess if you have a good look at the "warranty" it probably aint worth the paper its printed on, even if they gave you the T&C's in the first place.

I bet you will find that it probably doesnt cover the cost of labour.... and then you will probably have to pay for any new parts cus the warranty wont cover those either, then theres the VAT that wont be covered by the warranty and they will probably find something else wrong & that wont be covered by the warranty cus its wear & tear, ohhh.... the list will go on.

Make sure though that you check any household insurance policies before you get a new cooker or live without one for a while, I dont actually use mine that much. Try an ad on freecycle as suggested, always very good.

  • Hi there. Sorry that you are feeling like this at the moment - I do sympathise, I think we've all felt like this at times....I know I have!

With reference to the car, I tend to agree with tallyhoh. And I also would have tried freecycle too, or maybe see if you can find any ex-demo ones at shops?

Back to car: we got a little car last year and it was serviced when we bought it....we didn't need to get it serviced for a year as our mileage was so low (under 10K) and even then it was just oil change and the simple things, on the garages recommendation!

It's of course up to you what you do but if the car was serviced when you bought it, it's probably going to be fine to wait till it's anniversary and even then, shop around for quotes on servicing (at reputable garages mind you!) as you could find somewhere that little bit cheaper.

Chin up hon - it won't always be like this I promise.
