Train Travel Advice

I rarely if ever travel anywhere by train. But I need to go all the way down to sunny London (Kennington Road area) to be precise. Where would be the nearest station to get off at?

Is it just as cheap to book online nowadays than go to the station and pay?

It will almost certainly be cheaper to buy tickets in advance.

Where are you travelling from? That will determine what advice anyone can give you.

You can book through tickets from Bolton to London Euston (usually it will get you to change trains at Manchester Piccadilly or Wigan NW/Wallgate). If you book on the Virgin Trains website there are no booking fees - don't use The Train Line as this charges fees.

When you book, if the ticket type says "Advance" then it's cheaper but you need to stick to the specified trains. If it says "Off Peak" or "Anytime" then it's the same price as buying on the day of travel.

From Euston you can get the Underground to Lambeth North, Kennington or Oval depending on your final destination. For this you need an Oyster or contactless bank card.

You should, in theory, be able to buy most train tickets from a station at the same price as on-line. However if you look online you can try various options, ticket type, different route or train operator, even play with splitting your journey into cheaper portions. You will have the time to try these option, whereas the person in the ticket office may not ave the time, or inclination, to hunt around these options.

Kennington Road is fairly long but this MAP shows tube stations and bus stops/routes, if you zoom in, in the area.
