  • A similar thing happened to my separate fridge. I checked it and the thermostat had failed which is a common problem. It cost me under £10 for the part which I replaced and my fridge worked fine afterwards. It still works after about 18 months. Much cheaper than a new fridge. Find your fridge make and model number and look for the parts. It does sound like it could be a thermostat problem. There could be other reasons but I would bet on the thermostat.

I got the part from espares but would look elsewhere after being stung for a part for my washing machine very recently. I purchased a door hinge and found out that a door part was also broken as they frequently both break. It cost me nearly £10 for the hinge plus delivery. They wanted £14 for a small plastic part for the door which the hinge fits into. I purchased both parts on ebay for £3 as it was cheaper to purchase both parts ie a 2nd hinge to get the plastic hinge mounting than to purchase the hinge mounting from espares. I will not be rushing back to espares again.

  • Yes I did MSE ;) Not very difficult. There is a cooling plate at the back of my fridge and that needs to be unscrewed and the wire to the sensor fits to the panel and the old thermostat with the control dial is replaced.

The only problem that I had was that the plastic control dial which fits onto the thermostat did not fit as snugly as it should, not as tight a fit as the old thermostat. The parts seem to of been changed since my fridge was built and they are very generic and are meant to fit many different fridges across a range of different companies which are part of the same group.

Anyone with basic DIY abilities and a screwdriver should be able to do it.

You do need to be careful with the cooling panel, do not bend the tubing.

Frost free is more the freezer I would think as fridges do not freeze, they only cool to around 3-5C.

If you do it, put something over the drain hole at the back of the fridge to prevent any screws getting lost. Some tape or blue/white tack. Take care of the screws too. ;)
