Haven't been on here for a while but now need some advice please.
I've had a threat of court action from Moriarty Law, chasing a debt owed to Motor Mile Finance. Trouble is, I've checked my Experian and my Equifax reports and can't see anything owed to them, or anything I owe for roughly the right amount even. I think it must be a payday loan from about 4 years ago but I don't know who.
I've had no letters at all from MMF, may well have had emails to an old email address that I no longer use but nothing in writing at all.
Could do with some advice on my next step please?

You need to send them a 'prove it letter'; https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2607247
Hope this helps. Sorry for the short reply, I've got to run off.0 -

Hi,
What form did this "threat" come in, was it in a letter, text, email, phone call ?
Anything but a letter can be ignored, so if it was a letter, did it say "we will take you to court" or, more likely, "we may take you to court" ?

Sourcrates - it's a letter and it definitely says "We will take you to court". I haven't had any communication from anyone about this debt other than this letter though.
Will send a Prove It letter to them today - thanks for the link, CakeCrusader0 -

Yes, in that case provit letter is the way to go.
Watch out for a claim form though, if one drops on your door mat, post back for further advice.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. Hi
It’s worth checking your Noddle credit report too as it’s possible the debt could only show on that one.

Is it possible you could have defaulted on the debt over 6 years ago?

Possible - it's not on my Noddle report either. The only thing I can find on my credit report that I can't identify is a zero balance saying Settled but it makes no mention of Motor Mile Finance anywhere, on either closed accounts or open ones.0 -
If you defaulted over 6 years ago it would no longer show on any of your credit reports. The other reason I asked is that it may be statute barred. If that’s the case it would be unenforceable in court.
To be statute barred there needs to be at least 6 years (5 if you live in Scotland) from your last payment or written acknowledgement, and no CCJ. If Moriarty Law can prove it’s your debt you could send them this sample letter. The onus is on them to prove the debt isn’t statute barred or cease collection.
