Some Tips for Cutting the Costs of Shaving

Shaving costs a fortune if you use the big brand wet shavers. However with a bit of practice you can cut the cost to the point were 2 packs of 3 blade cartridges will cover you for over a year.

So how do you do this?

First you need to get an old skool safety razor, just like your granddad had. There are several different types on the market, so some internet researcher is needed. This is more to do with the type of stubble you have. I have 2 safety razors; one low cost and another flash one. The low cost is still my favorite, so cost is not always a factor.

A good German make will cost about £30 online, which is around the cost of 2 packs of 3 blade cartridges. However this is made of surgical stainless steel, and will last a lifetime.

Next are the blades, which is where you really save the money. I recommend getting a mixed pack off of amazon to start with. £15 will give you a mixed bag of around 100 blades and sometime some free shaving cream.

All blades are not the same, some last longer, some are very very sharp. The point is to find out what you like.

The blades have 4 edges, one on each side and the blade can be flipped to give 2 more. I can get around 6 to 8 shaves out of a blade before I need to replace it.

So now you have a razor and some blades you like, it’s time to save. A pack of 100 of my favorite blades costs me £10, with free shaving soap. So working on 6 shaves a blade, that’s 600 shaves or nearly 2 years of shaving.

However there are some things to point out.

1) You will have to learn to use it, as it takes no prisoners. You cannot just throw this around your face, as you will look like something from a horror film. There are some really good YouTube vids showing how to use safety razors. Form one of these, I learned in around a mouth.

2) You will need to have a two pass shave. This is where you shave twice at 2 different, angels to get the closeness you need.

Apart from this there are some other added advantages.

You will probably have the best shave of your life. I am never going back to big brand razors!!!

Modern glide strips can have some nasty chemicals which can cause skin irritation. When I switched my skin problems all but disappeared.

Eco friendly: the razor will last for a life time, and the blades have no plastic and can be recycled.

Hope someone fined this of use, and If you need more information, pop up a post.

  • DH doesn't use branded razors as he says they are a waste of money.

He just uses an old style wet razon and buys new blades when the old ones are dull. He buys wilkos blades I believe, which are pennies.
