White Fillings U.K.

My dentist quoted me £180 for a white filling on a small premolar-am I right in thinking this is outrageous?

I'm a student and ordinarily would pay for the NHS treatment but due to me having overcrowded teeth and multiple extractions as a child the 5th tooth from the front, a small premolar is further forward than normal and the grey amalgam filling would be visible when I talk/smile which at 27 is not something I want.

He advised I go elsewhere or save the filling for when I can afford it if it bothers me.

I've had a white filling on the same tooth at the bottom and it cost me £70, I'm just intrigued how in two years the cost has more than doubled!

Hope at least you don't experience the same pain as I did with white fillings ... which eventually forced me to have them replaced with amalgam.

My niece had a similar issue, although it was 3 (smallish) fillings covering 2 teeth. She was charged £150, and was not warned in advance, and we were wondering if she could kick off about it as she was not given a form to sign to say she agreed to the charge. (As she should have been.)

Like you hun, she is a young lady and like you she is potless! (Like most students,) and she was so upset at having to pay that her mother coughed up half for her in the end, even though SHE is not that well off either.

I guess if you were not warned about the cost, you may have a right to complain. But the dentist hasn't done it yet I gather? Some dentists are proper money grabbers. They know they have you over a barrel as you can't do your own flippin' teeth can you?

I am sorry you are being charged so much. Maybe ask at a few other dentists how much it will cost...
    cooeeeeeeeee :j
  • How much cost we pay for this ....
  • I've just had an amalgam replaced by a white filling in much the same position as yours - I noticed that the tooth looked grey and it could be seen when I smiled. Vanity? Or making the effort to fix what can be fixed?

It cost £90 (about 2 weeks ago). I don't know if yours is more expensive because mine was just replacing an existing filling?
No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...

There are many reasons that dental practices have different prices - in exactly the same way that restaurants have different prices.

Different service levels, different ingredients, different qualifications and reputation of the head chef.

But what is right and proper is that people know what they are going to be paying before they have the work done.

£180 for a white filling is no more a 'rip off' than paying £50 for a steak in the right place with the right attitude to service and the best equipment and skills. In fact, the people who use and like that service will probably feel it is very good value-for-money.

What is wrong is places that don't let people know the price beforehand, or the quality of service does not match the prices.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
