Workplace issues

Hey all Im new to this forum but have been browsing for a while now.

I have a question about my current employer which is causing me quite a bit of stress at the moment. I have been working as a manager in a store for over a year now and have started to notice more about the culture and values of the company.

I have noticed that employee wages are potentially being messed with. We send some staff home on quiet days because there is no work. This can be done 2 or 3 hours into their shift. The company sometimes deduct an hour lunch for these short shifts despite the employee not actually taking a lunch. Is that legal? The staff are on minimum wage and i would have thought this would bring them to below the national minimum?

Should I be concerned about this? I dont like the idea that staff are losing out on money under my watch but it could all be legal maybe?

    If you have concerns that incorrect deductions are being made from payroll, you need to contact payroll to check. Part of your responsibility as a manager is to ensure that staff are treated properly.
    I am surprised that none of the staff seem to have picked up on it.

    Are they being paid for all of the hours that they actually work? If so, then as long as their hourly rate is at or above NMW/NLW then it's fine. If not, then it could be illegal deductions. It might be worth contacting ACAS, although I would suggest that you come back here to tell us what they say as they have been known to give out wrong advice.
