notice period

My contractual notice period is one month. Just had a call from HR saying that they wanted to change it to a three month notice period. The contracts that we work on are coming to an end and staff are leaving in droves!
The HR woman seemed surprised that I didnt agree immediately and wanted time to think about it.
Do i need a consultation period legally, and are there any pros to agreeing to this?, I can only see cons at the moment!
Many thanks

It's difficult to see any pro's from your side. Obvious ones for the company of course. If there is no financial incentive to agree to the longer notice period I'd not be inclined to agree either.0

Tell them you are happy for the company notice to you to go upto 3months but you will be staying on 1 month if they want you to stay.
If you have been there more than two years they can't just not renew contracts they have to go through redundancy process
If people are not renewing and leaving extending notice periods just makes recruitment harder.
Tell them to fix the problems that are causing people to leave.
This is the sort of daft thing some NHS trusts have been doing crazy incompetent HR.0
