Not good at studying, but long term unemployed and want a better future.

I would like to reply to everyone lol. Basically I am still looking for work. I thought I'm gonna keep applying for jobs and fingers crossed. I am really struggling to find anything at the moment though and it's horrible. My days are so boring, just job searching and watching interesting t.v shows. I probably should cut out the t.v entirely, but I do enjoy watching interesting documentaries and cooking shows, like Rick Stein etc. I am considering giving volunteering another go, because I need to fill my days in and I really need to man up and take control over my anxiety and panic attacks otherwise they will continue to control me. I want a better future than what I have now. I feel pretty miserable at the moment with no direction in my life. My plan is to work my way up somewhere and hopefully aim to earn a lot of money, even if I have to work 100 hours a week to achieve this. My mental health has taken over my life too much already, so I need to focus on goals from now on. Does anybody recommend what else I can do to find work? It's very disheartening to open my email account and have no new messages from jobs I've applied for, even for an interview.0

I enjoy: cooking, meeting people, talking to others and finding out about their lives, mixed martial arts (though to be honest I haven't trained in it recently. I watch it, but I trained in it years ago for a short time), selling stuff, but more for money on the side rather than a business or job, art, reading (when I am in the mood for it anyway), media/films/tv, technology. Of the list above, I would probably like to work in technology, cooking, media but there needs to be enough money in it or would allow me to make good progress up the career ladder, otherwise for me it's not worth it. I want to work towards being financially stable, not struggling. I cannot drive at the moment. I am, however, taking the occasional driving lesson at the moment, so hopefully when I can find a job I can up my lessons and get to take my test ASAP.0

As someone else said on this board "positive things happen to positive people" review why you aren't seeing a new vacancy each day that you can apply for? Even not actively looking just a glance at a job board could lead me astray.
I failed my GCSE's with g's mainly but would never allow someone to tell me I was useless when with the ability to take 89 calls in a shift as being my highest call stats to date
and working the different hours many don't want to or can't even and have at times paid for my own development/training to go with job which has gone a long way even to the folk just offering 'a job to earn' - I've worked for some big names even now feeling like a halfway there granny in the workplace, not always is there entitlement to any further then induction and mandatory in workplace training I'm afraid.
The part in bold is very true. I find it quite difficult to constantly job search every day when I am hearing zero back from employers. I would love nothing more than a positive email saying "congratulations, we're inviting you for an interview" or similar haha. It's so tough to keep grinding out the days job searching when I put 20/30 minutes into a application and nothing! It can be disheartening. I need to find a different way to find work and think outside the box. Got any ideas? If I could drive it would be easier as could go further afield too. Yeah you should never feel let people say you're not good enough. It sounds like you're achieved a great deal already, so I am sure you will continue to do so. How many years do you have left to work? If you don't mind me asking haha.0 -
Just the fact you've had 2 interviews in the past 2 weeks is a positive sign and reason enough to continue the way you are going. Some people send dozens of applications off without landing an interview.
You can't get every job you apply for or interview for, especially when there is only one position available. Most vacancies are over-subscribed. I applied for a job once and found out there were 500+ applicants. Probably around 10-15 got an interview.
Like someone else said, it's a number game, the fact you are getting interviews is positive though and something will turn up.0 -
OK, it's unlikely that you will get a job that provides lots of money straight away, but if you focus on finding jobs in the sorts of area that you enjoy, you can then start to look at ways of increasing your income/earning capacity as you gain skills, experience and reputation.
Studying - it's very different to study something you are interested and have chosen to do, as opposed to being in school because you feel you have to be! And you may also find it easier in a small group or independently than in a large group
One option might be to look into evening / adult ed. classes local to you, to see whether there are any which would offer skills you could use to improve your job prospects -All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Yes I was thinking about an adult class. I don't know what to study though. Would you recommend free online courses? I have been thinking of doing an online course, but which general course/s would help me find employment?0

Cookery? That shines through as a real interest of yours. Personally I think that life in a commercial kitchen would be hell, but if you are interested, you could further this interest through an adult class.....Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Yes, cooking is an interest of mine. I also enjoy travelling. At one time I wanted to study Anthropology. I would like to just focus on getting a job for now. Maybe I could try for a kitchen assistant role, but it's just very tough to get anything at the moment. I want to find a job as soon as I can, but how I don't know.0 -
Our local Wetherspoons is always looking for people both kitchen and bar, something like that would get you started in hospitality and ket to see one side of the catering industry.
You could build on that experience with complementary study/courses while earning.
If you like travel then you could look at cruise ship jobs although they generally employ from the far east there are openings for people from anywhere. Long hours and and hard work but I have met a few brits that say they get more money in their pocket than they were working low end jobs in the UK.
Study works best if you have a reason or an interest or it relates to real life. I still find some subject really hard to stuff as I have no interest others I go searching for as I have an interest and it maps onto things I am doing.
eg. I could not sit and learn excel from a book, but if I have a task that needs a spreadsheet then I can learn the bits to make that happen.0
