Does anyone know re landline phone and rentals? The last tenants moved out on Monday and we move in this Friday. Do you think they will have left the line, or we will need a new one connected? How long does this usually take?
Thanks C xx0 -
We're renting. They usually leave the line in, if they had one, if you ring BT they will tell you. House we're moving into has been empty over a year, well no phone line in anyway, so we have to pay £124.99 for reconnection. Usually when one moves in one moves out there isn't a charge.
For the reconnection an engineer is calling next week to do ours, I rang yesterday. One day I might be more organised...........

Hullo all you lovely knowledgeable old-stylers!!!:p
When I moved into my flat 6 years ago it was just me and a few bags of clothes, now of course 6 years later I've accumulated a lot of stuff and I'm going to move to a new flat with my boyfriend 2 weeks on Saturday :j (he's moving from parents so a bit easier for him)
Where on earth do I start packing up all my stuff and how do I do it!!
Do I throw anything away? How do I pack up so the boxes don't take up too much space (very limited at the moment as studio flat)??
Help help help!!!:p
I really have no idea what to do as I've never really done it before!!
I'm very excited though!! I will have a proper kitchen!!! :j
Thank you in advance
xx

When I moved 3 years ago. It was me and my husband moving from a one bed Flat to a three bedroom house.
I started to pack up weeks in advance. Kept only the basics out like one mug, plate, knife, fork, spoon etc each. A couple of saucepans. Started to run stock down in my cupboards.
The last week before I moved I had no fridge or freezer as it was old so I got rid of rather than moving it.
I kept out a few of my fav clothes and packed the rest. All books and bits and pieces where packed. Computer packed the night before the move.
Still took for ever and we where late leaving as where cleaning as went :rotfl:
All the best with the move.Hope for everything and expect nothing!!!

If you are getting rid of things can you use Freecycle rather than throw them away?Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!0

Good idea about freecycle.
Of course moving house does mean you get to de-clutter stuff as well.

The big secret is don't have boxes that are too big or you will never lift them!!
Books move really well in those flat boxes the supermarkets get bananas in.
But most important put labels on the boxes so you know which room they should be left in - especially the box with the kettle and the coffee things in!!0 -
I'm a huge fan of Freecycle so will be using that, that's an added bonus- decluttering along the way!!Official DFW Nerd no. 082! :cool:Debt @ 01/01/2014 £16,956 Debt now: £0.00 :j

Hi purpleprincess! Congrats on your move! I must confess, I am not an expert however, have moved several times and would advise the following:
- Start by going to your local supermarket and getting as many boxes as possible (ask someone if you cannot see them) - the fruit & veg ones are the best as they stack.
- Use old newspaper around breakables - I know it means you may have to clean plates (etc) at the new place but, it stops breakages...!
- I would say throw away everything you don't need/want when you pack. Try and keep your waste in the new place to a minimum - you don't want to be sifting through rubbish!!
- Label ALL of the boxes so that you know what room each box goes in. Ie: kitchen, front room, master bedroom, bathroom, etc, etc. Make sure the boxes find their correct rooms or else you will be searching for something and it could take forever!!
I always find that packing takes a lot longer than expected and unfortunately, I end up with a few 'junk' boxes - ones where stuff is just thrown in an attempt to get out as soon as possible!! (This probably isn't a very good example to follow....!)
Hope this helps a bit. I'm sure someone will be along soon with some more ideas. Good luck, I hope all goes well!Official DFW Member 716 - Proud to be dealing with my debts0
