Left a job - underpaid for my last pay package!

I left a job from a highly well known bank (believe it or not!) on the 27th Jan 2017 to another external company.

To my astonishment I received a very small amount as my last pay. I phoned HR up to query this but they are adamant they are correct however it just does not sit right with me.

They have paid me 5 days pay including tax rebates, accrued holiday allowance. However in my head I was expecting to have a full month's wage which I rightly should have.

They then proceeded to tell me that the cut off date was 22nd Jan so that's why they paid me for the 5 days. It's really strange because the last time I got paid from them is the 19th Jan and the payslips are released on the 17th!

Am I going crazy here?

It will depend on normal pay date, period covered and how much in advance/arrears. It would appear that you had already been paid on 19/1 for the period to 22/1 and left on 27/1 hence the 5 days.
  • Without knowing your pay system its difficult to tell.

However, if you were last paid on the 19th Jan and only worked until the 27th Jan, it seems a bit strange you expected a full months pay, are you normally paid a full month in arrears?

When you first started, how long did you work there until you got paid, 2 months?

A cut off date of the 22nd and payment on the 19th is fine.

For example, I get my payslip on roughly the 22nd, I get paid on the 25th but that actually covers until the end of the calendar month.
If I, like you, got paid on the 25th then left on the last day of the month, I would be owed 'nothing' for those last 5/6 days.
