All Round Designer Watch Advice

Hi All

I have a milestone birthday coming up (40th) and wanted to mark it with a nice branded watch that I can appreciate for many years.

Budget is £1500 to £2000.

As I have never spent that sort of money on a watch before I thought I would look to the wider audience for advice.

Therefore I would appreciate any recommendations on a watch that could be an all rounder, something I can wear with jeans on the weekend and also something that I can wear to the office.

Spending that amount I would like it to be automatic and generally be my main watch that I could wear at all times.

Hope this is the right section for this question and such a watch exists :-)

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

For that money, you're in Sinn or Fortis territory i'd say. Both are nearly up with Omega for quality, but at much more realistic prices. As for specific models, only you can say really, one mans every day watch is another mans horrid ugly thing. I happily wear big chunky divers watchers to the office some times, or other times i wear a nice elegant 1950's Omega.

The great thing about these brands is, to the average Joe, as it's not an Omega or Rolex, they don't give it a second look, but if a watch fan spots it, you'll get comments or an appreciating nod, whereas no-one comments on someone wearing a boring old modern rolex or omega, especially as a large percentage will be fake.

Don't use the term 'designer' watches, that's a term for a cheap quartz watch with a fashion name slapped on and sold at silly prices. So googling that won't get what you're after, quality automatic swiss made watches.

Other brands to consider in that sort of price range are Breitling, Hamilton, Longines, Oris, it all depends on what style grabs you, you won't go wrong with any of those brands, all make good quality watches.

I have a Sinn U1 (style not everyones taste i agree) as well as modern and vintage omegas and other brands, 10 in total? maybe, not all are expensive, Seiko make some fantastic automatic divers watches for less than £150, not generally sold in the UK though. My Sinn is a really well made thing though.

If you want to spend a long time chosing and get some good advice, you'd do well to join a forum where you can ask questions, i'd suggest TZ-UK

And don't buy new. A 3-4 year old watch will be 50-75% less than a new one and it will keep its value should you ever want to trade it.
