Adverse credit mortgage...advice needed

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can help me....
Myself and husband are looking into buying a new build home at £255,000. We will definitely have a 15% deposit and at a very big push could raise 20% but would rather not as would like that for furnishings etc and 1st few months bills.
Husband works as a crane operator at sea and is paid on a day rate with a minimum of 180 days per year...worked for the same company on a permanent contract for 4 years now and earns on average 73000 per year. He has an accountant who deals with his tax situation (exempt due to being out of country). I work as a teacher earning 25000 per year so affordability is ok although last mortgage advisor (Mortgage advice bureau) said husbands wages would have to go through as self employed???
The huge problem we are having is a default husband had from a few years ago (debt he had before he met me). After paying the debt for so long he was persuaded to join a DMP which neither of us realised at the time would mean a default on account every month until paid off. The account defaulted for 12000 in June 2012 and was deemed fully settled by July 2013 (shown on equifax credit report). He has since been able to obtsin finance for a car with current balance of 6000 and I also have a car finance plus credit card totalling 24000 all payments up to date and account in green on equifax. Husbands default has obviously had a huge impact on his credit score which has now been reduced by another 46 points after a mortgage refusal from Santander. The advisor from MAB has told us he may be able to secure one with Halifax but I am very reluctant to further impact pur credit score with another refusal.
Has anyone experienced/helped with this before? Are there any independent companies we could look out for or any brokers that could be recommended to help with our situation.
Thank you for reading this far...apologies it is lobg but felt I should include as much info as poss.

I maybe should have also added that we have had our current mortgage with Norwich and Peterborough for 10 years without 1 missed or late payment...not sure if that will help also

Im not sure I would have tried Santander, they are not really known for accepting defaults.
I do think because of the age of the default that is easy enough to overcome.
You probably will need a broker, but I am pretty sure there will be a lender for you.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. Thank you for your quick reply ACG, that has reassured me somewhat. The person who was advising us for the advice bureau had decided they would be best although I was somewhat apprehensive. I may seem a bit silly asking this but how do I find an whole of the market broker?? I originally thought google but thats how I ended up with the advice bureau?...I have also looked up adverse credit mortgages and come across a company called simply adverse but again I am totally clueless on what I should be looking for...
Thank you again for any advice you can give me...
On searching these forums earlier I realise now that replys aren't allowed that name recommendations for brokers etc but if anyone is a broker and thinks they may be able to help feel free to inbox me
Thanks again ACG
