Employment rights for a temporary worker

Hi,

My son was fired by his supervisor by hand writing on paper -

'I am firing you because of the convasations [sic] we had on the shop floor...and because of your attitude.'

Apparently this was regarding him not appearing happy enough, although he told them he was just trying to remember the process. I'm guessing this was a personality clash but is it acceptable for the supervisor to hand write a note firing him, rather than a proper conversation with the store manager?

His contract was due to end in 2 weeks, but now it'll be on record that he was fired.

  • Unless he wants to get a reference from that employer in future, it doesn't really matter what the employer's record says.

    Acceptable to whom?

Assuming he has been employed for less than two years he can be dismissed any reason (apart from unlawful discrimination) or no reason at all. They were under no obligation to give him a reason.

If he has been employed for more than a month then he is entitled to a week's notice (or pay in lieu).

He is also entitled to be paid for any untaken holiday which will have accrued at a rate of just over 1 day for each two weeks worked.

Thanks, this is useful to know.
  • Is the temporary work under a direct contract with the hiring company or is he paid by an agency?
