Cast iron or cast aluminium casserole?

does anyone have any experience with both?

I'm looking for a casserole dish that can be transferred from the hob to the oven and cast iron or cast aluminium seem to be the options.

I have a cast aluminium wok / pan type thing that I love but cast iron seems to be the done thing for casseroles. I can't stretch to a Le Creuset so price seems to be about the same for both.

  • Personally, I'd go for cast iron if prices were the same. Am making a Aash-e reshte (Persian soup) in a 26cm Le Creuset casserole dish for tonight's supper.
I bought a 33cm Le Creuset grill yesterday and noticed prices for Le Creuset are no longer expensive or even outrageous but boarding on criminal. A family sized casserole dish is now north of £200..... crazy!

If you want cast iron have a look at Sainsbury's or Nisbets on line. Both their cast iron ranges are pretty decent and much much cheaper than Le Cruset.
  • Cast iron.
I would go for second hand Le Creuset. Very cheap on Ebay for almost new.

I use cast aluminium, bough mine ages ago from Lakeland. I've also had cast iron in the past and am quite happy with either, I simply use the cast aluminium because it's so much lighter and easier to store for me :)

    Cast iron

The one cast iron pot I use daily, and I do mean daily, is my Sainsburys shallow casserole. I picked it up for £15 five years ago end of line sale ( don't worry, they still do them ). I think they are usually £45 but they are always on sale

I use it for everything, even to fry eggs. It's my wok, it's my biryani dish, it's my casserole and roasting pan.

Best bit of kit I've bought in years
