  • Hiya I know its a minefield out there! so many schools to choose from! I see acclaim do intensive courses and might try them. Someone told me when you do this course other ppl will be sittin in the back seat of the car waiting for their turn/lesson?! dont fancy that would distract u too much! I have driven before but failed my test. Think its time to get my finger out now and get it passed!!

Yeah some driving schools do the lessons as shared but others do 121 or shared, the choice is yours but there is a big difference in the price. I`ve looked into this and I don`t think it would be a good idea doing the lessons shared, I wouldn`t do it anyway, The idea of doing shared lessons is so you
can "learn" from the other person but I personally wouldn`t like that, I would definately go for 121 tuition. Check one I found in Blackpool.

I enquired about the intensive course with a company in Belfast who offer it. They actually advised against it as they said it is 'too intense' and, in their experience, most people can't take in all the information they get in a 4/5 hr session. They recommended that you book 3-4 lessons per week with an instructor if you want to pass your test fairly quickly.

In the end, I went the conventional route. Found an absolutely fantastic instructor through Ian's School of Motoring and passed first time back in July.

Hi Deb, just to let you know that I went on one of the intensive driving courses in Blackpool - I failed the test due to nerves. The intuition was excellent and the driving school have a high pass rate. I really enjoyed the course and came away feeling confident that I would be able to pass 2nd time around. When I got home I put straight back in for my test and sat it 2 weeks later and I am pleased to say that I passed with 4 minors. I didn`t take any more lessons in between, I just went out with my other half. The course was intense but if your willing to work hard, it`s worth it in the end.
  • I am only recently passed and learnt with Confidence school of motoring, with a guy named Brian and couldnt recommed him enough.
I would like to be able to admire a man’s opinions as I would his dog - without being expected to take it home with me."

re the comment about IAM advanced motorists course above. I passed my advanced driving test in 2003 but have not experienced any significant lowering of my insurance premiums since and would not recommend doing it JUST to get lower insurance [and subsequently ignore everything you learned!].

However i WOULD recommend it in terms of improving your driving skills, reading the road and generally making you a better, safer driver. I found the training to be invaluable and have no doubt that it has saved me from landing in the ditch...or worse... on several occasions.

i noticed in my local chinese there was a sign up for Ballymoney council subsidising the IAM course for young drivers - i think it's only £20. well worth it!
