Should I reapply for a different mortgage?

So....
AIP from First Direct to borrow more for an extension. We have been through credit checks, affordability and valuation for the new deal and have a 2.19% fee free 5 year fix ready to go in mid March.
Now HSBC have produced a 1.94% fee free fix which would cost 900 less over the 5 year term. I phoned and they said I would have to go through a new application ( they own FD).
Can I break FD deal? If so will I have bother because of traces on credit file? HSBC couldn't give me an answer.
