Bus Driving and Tacho Cards?

Hi,

A friend has just started training with a well known bus company. However they've made him surrender his digital tacho card.

Is there a reason for this? Legal, or company policy?

Driving hours are limited by law - this could be to cut down on the risk of him moonlighting.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

    That was my first thought.

Then I thought, what's to stop him reapplying for the card from the DVLA in a month or so?

Couldn't he have asked them at the time?

If there's only a few positions, and they're interviewing loads, you tend to not want to rock the boat at the interview?

I don't see how asking a legitimate question is boat rocking.

You try sitting in an interview for a job you want, and then ask yourself "Do I really want to ask a question that could cause them to wonder if I really want this job?" Then you see how you'd just say "Ok" and leave it at that!

I would guess that DVLA would notice that he already had an active card and not issue a new one.

Anyway, buses used on regular services not more than 30 miles in length are exempt from tacho regs, so are not fitted with tachos of any kind.

If the op's friend is driving long haul (i.e. National Excuse routes to airports/cities) then these are likely to have tachos fitted.

I don't know of anything - but it would change the other driving from a case of 'why not on my day off' to something involving premeditation.
