  • This is what I'd do Sammy Kaye -

    1) Cut up some bacon rashers into small pieces and fry till crisp.

    2) Baked beans in a baking dish, sprinkle over bacon bits and grated cheese.

    3) Top with mashed potato like a shepherd's pie. I'd sprinkle more grated cheese on. Bake in the oven till tinged with brown.

Think I'll make one for the kids -thanks for the idea:D

    Hi there

How about cheese n potato pie

cook and mash some potatoes, adding some fried onions, chopped up bacon, grated cheese.... and either pile it onto a dish and shove it in the oven until the top goes crispy and serving with baked beans.... or i put it into pastry cases, or make it into pasties

Sammy you've just taken me back to when we were kids, my older sister used to make us something very similar to this for supper. She would fry bacon, mix it in with beans, and sprinkle cheese on the top and put it under a grill, its making my mouth water just thinking of it, 'cheesy bacon beans' was her name for it. I'm now thinking on similar lines as Thriftlady and Mrscawber, only I would used par-boiled sliced potatos on top of beans and bacon layers, then sprinkle with cheese mmm might try this at the weekend, as if I change the menu I'll only confuse the family :rotfl:

I think I'd be more inclined to mix breadcrumbs with cheese for the topping so he gets his 'toastie' bit too :D

To make it more of a casserole based dish you could add a tin of tommies to the beans & bacon - it would make it go further too?
  • hmmmmmmmm......................................im thinking thrify ladys sounds good - chuck it all in a dish and leave it do its thing. Stupid question - id have to drain the beans a bit though as i use the value ones and find there is alot of juice in them, do you think there would be enough juice then??? Thinking this actually sounds kinda nice - think i might have a bit for myself later on.

If you drain some of the bean juice off, save it and you can warm it and pour it on if you need too.

i would cook some rice( if your bf eats rice) then mix in with it a tin of baked beans'. inculding all jiuce so it not to dry , add in chopped up cooked bacon and serve with cheese sprikled on top.

or cook a jacket spud, when cooked scrap out insides , mix with cooked bacon , beans and cheese, fill jackets back up add more cheese for top and cook until cheese bubbling.

or mix all together with mash spud and use puff pastry and make some pasties.

or how about a pizza , use baked beans for the tom sauce bit , then add chopped up cooked bacon , then cheese on top.

sorry can't think of any more. but i'm hungary now tho.
  • I do a baked bean and potato pie (I do similar with corned beef too) - chop potato in cubes and boil till just soft, then drain. Put half the potatoes into a casserole dish, pour the beans on top then I add chopped onion (and corned beef sometimes). Put the rest of the potatoes on top then sprinkle with grated cheese and bake in the oven. You don't need to drain the beans as the juice is absorbed by the potatoes.

I would either cook the bacon, cut into bits and add in with the onions OR cut the raw bacon into strips, layer accross the top of the potatoes and then sprinkle with cheese. The bacon will cook when you bake the pie (I do this with maccaroni cheese or cauliflower cheese).

    hth?

As he's a bloke, by "pie" he probably means something in pastry that he can eat on the run, do you think? I'd go with the pasty-type suggestions, because to a male, "shepherds pie" or "cottage pie" isn't really a pie at all!

Must admit I like my pies to have a pastry component too ;) . In fact I get quite disappointed if they just have a pastry topping, as it needs to be all round to make a proper pie.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D
