Which puppy food????

Hi,

Any advice, opinions over which puppy food I should give my puppy "Molly", a Chocolate Lab, who's arriving Saturday?
There are so many different opinions, I am getting very confused and cannot decide.
She's being fed a cheaper food (Waggs) at the moment, but I'd like to change her to something that offers more in vitamins etc....
I have bought a small bag of Iams, but after reading different reports I may not use that.
Advice would be appreciated.

for natural, top class ingredients, you cant beat John Burns or James Wellbeloved. Bit more expensive but you get what you pay for. Nothing artificial with no by products. They both have websites and you can ring them for some advice.

You are what you eat and this should apply to dogs too.

Do you want to feed wet or dry food? When we first got Belle, she was on Bakers puppy. I changed her to Nature diet wet food and Burns dry, we just went cold turkey, (against the advice of the advisers at Naturediet) and she was fine. The advise is usually to switch gradually, but her poos were huge, runny and multicoloured  I couldnt bear to keep her on it. James wellbeloved is another really good dog food, you can get free samples from the website, sorry I dont have a link, I'm not that good :rotfl: but just google James wellbeloved, also Naturediet has a website, they will send you a sample of the puppy food if you ring them, they did for me, its worth asking.

Yes, I want to give her dry food. I didn't want to go OTT on the cost, however if these foods are superior to ther foods I certainly don't mind paying!!!

I feed jwb 2x daily just it is a bit dearer but you are what you eat. see if you can find a lab forum and ask what food they are feeding because so breeds trive on different foods
  • Hi

I used to have a lab and used to feed him Bakers complete. I now have a shih tzu puppy and also use Bakers puppy and she loves it. The vet recommended it too. Its not too expensive either around £2.10 a box.

    :D
  • Just a quick note, we have a 9 wk old cavalier and a 10mth old sprocker and they are both fed on Arden Grange, very natural diet dry food but slightly cheaper than james well beloved but just as good

    Hi,

Thanks for your replies. I've just rang my vets who recommend Hills Science Plan, any views on this food??

  • Hi Wendy,

Not sure whether it's one of your priorities but Hills Science Plan is tested on animals and is owned by Colgate Palmolive. There are many great foods available which are not tested on animals and are often better products because they're made with more natural ingredients.

I don't know if it's the case with your vet, but often large pet food companies will give incentives for vets to promote their product. So just because the vet recommends it doesn't necessarily mean it's better for your dog than any other food.

    There's a list on this website : http://www.uncaged.co.uk/petfood.htm

  • Thanks Hayleyc,
Yes that is very important to me. I will not be using Hill's,Iams or Eukanuba for that reason.
