Jury service payment!

Hi,

Hoping someone can clear this up for me as my jurors pack isn't very clear!

My employer does not pay me for the time that I serve in court and will need to arrange cover for the full 10 days that I could be out of office. Due to this, I will not be able to return to work for half days etc during that period.

If my employer fills in the form "loss of earnings" form and states that I cannot return to work during the 10 day period, will the court pay me the daily rate @£64 for the entire 10 days period, even if it finishes earlier than expected or i'm let out early etc?

Thank you!

    Should do.

Bear in mind it isn't necessarily exactly 10 days - when we got called up for one case the judge was asking those picked for the jury if they had a specific reason why they couldn't go into what would for them be days 11 and 12. One guy said he needed to get back to work and was provisionally stood out but if they'd not had anyone to replace him, he may have had to do it regardless - the judges decision is final (although in my experience they were all very respectful of the inconvenience jury service causes and try very hard to be helpful.

You may find that you get sent home for days at a time. Again in my experience one group were picked on the first day and told they would be used for a jury on day 3 - told to go home and come back then. I did 3 days without making it onto an actual trial and then got stood down for the rest of the first week to come back in the second week. What you will definitely find is that even when you are on a trial there is a lot of hanging about time whilst there are legal arguments or waiting for a trial to start etc - so take a good book!

Once the court signs you off when they no longer need you you will not be paid by the court even if your company does not take you back to work. The only payments the courts do is for the time you are there {plus food and if needed travel expenses}. The payments as stated in your jury pack also say that under 4 hours daily pay is £32.47 so if you are let go in under 4 hours you will not get £64.95. Both of those payments are the MAX the court will pay not the set amount for each day, the only "set" costs you will get is

Bus or underground Cost of the ticket
Train Cost of the ticket (2nd class return fare)
    Bicycle 9.6p per mile
    Motorcycle 31.4p per mile
Car 31.4p per mile - ask the court for permission if you need to pay for parking
Car - for one other juror as a passenger 4.2p per mile
Car - for each additional passenger 3.2p per mile
Taxi The fare - ask the court for permission before using a taxi
    also up to

Length of time each day you’re away from home or work The court will pay up to
Up to and including 10 hours a day £5.71 per day
Over 10 hours a day £12.17 per day
