Loaf Tin

I have "inherited" a few loaf tins over the years but need to know what weight they are for eg 2lb tin, etc.

I bought a new one not long ago in a charity shop - thought it was 2lb but when I got it home found it was 1½lb (found a wee label under the price label).

Thank you.

Just an idea - and I don't know whether this would work - could you use volume to determine the "weight"? Eg fill with water, tip into a measuring jug. 100ml = 100g

Although I appreciate that the density of water and cake batter is very different.

A 2lb loaf tin filled to the brim holds approx 1 litre of water, so using this as a guide a 1lb tin should hold 500ml and so on
  • Yes, a 1lb tin will hold 1pt of liquid and a 2lb one will hold 2pts. It comes from the fact that in America (where their pints are small than ours) 'a pint's a pound the world around' but in the UK 'a pint of water weights a pound and a quarter'. So if you measure with US pints the water will nearly fill the tin, but if you measure with UK pints the water will come very close or right to the top of the tin. Either way you'll be able to tell which size you have.

Off topic, but sort of connected... in the queue for the loos at slimming club before weigh in, a friend, an ex maths teacher, used to say "a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter, it's worth queuing":rotfl::rotfl:
