The ups, downs, and occasional sideways bits of trying to be mortgage free

  • Yeah, I think it's the fact that I'm staring at the figures. On the other hand, I have more opportunity to increase my salary than he does, and that might have to be the answer.

Anyway! I'm staring at YNAB and staring at the bank account, and do you think that if the total balance in YNAB - i.e. everything I've budgeted - is less than what I have in the bank, it's safe to transfer some over to the mortgage as an OP?

Well. considering you had only just recently re-set YNAB, I would be asking why there is a disparity.

If you have a good answer, then go ahead. If not, I would leave it there for a month as a buffer. Once it has a clear month, then transfer.
Still striving to be mortgage free before I get to a point I can't enjoy it.

Do you know what, I just typed up this whole long answer explaining my mystification, and then I realised that it's because when I did the Fresh Start I still had about $5K on the credit card, so the amount I put into Transaction Account was my actual balances (I went through and added them all up so that I didn't lose the bits I had allocated for longer term expenses) PLUS the credit card balance.

So that'll be why. Darn it. No OP for me.

  • Anyway, let me tell you about my day. I'm brewing a cold, just to set the scene. And the weather, which taunted us with a couple of days of sunshine, turned again. So I took Doggie to the off leash park on the basis that I could walk slowly and she could leg it about. We walked for a little while, and then it started to bucket. And then it started to hail. Doggie was darting about with a panicked look on her face, the already-saturated ground had turned into a mud pit, it was ridiculous. So we sloshed back to the car - I'm absolutely saturated here, boots soaked through and squelching, trousers sticking to me, hair dripping - and while I waited for the fogged windscreen to clear I was saying to Doggie don't worry we'll go home, I'll towel you off and put the heater on. Drove home fantasising about a nice hot cup of tea, sipped while it's still scalding. Get home. Flick the kettle on. The power goes out.

Readers, the power was out for THREE HOURS. I'm wet. Doggie is wet. There is no heater. There is no light. I CANNOT HAVE A CUP OF TEA. It was very traumatic. I did consider walking to the nearby cafe for sustenance, but I resisted, so there's that. Anyway this has nothing at all to do with money saving (except the bit where I didn't buy a cup of tea) I just needed to share.

  • That was a very unfair scenario  but also very :rotfl:
I don't think I could have resisted the cafe so well done.

Things come in 3's. The brewing cold, the drenching and then the power cut.

At least you weren't on your own. Terrible to suffer all that with no-one to share with. Doggie should have earned a special treat.

Should be a good week, now you've got it all the bad stuff over and done with.

  • That is a very optimistic way of looking at things, thank you! Only got drizzled on a bit during this morning's walk, so that's an improvement. I am, at this point, a Bit Over The Weather. Which is not unlike being under the weather.

Yesterday was an NSD in the end, and I'm going for the same today. We do need bread flour and cat food, but there's a loaf rising at the moment and I reckon I can eke the cat food out until tomorrow. Cuban pork and black beans for dinner, which is one of my favourite things.

I'm still confused about the YNAB balance, actually. Without going into tedious detail I may have counted the money needed for the credit card twice. I'll be able to tell at the end of September.

  • YNAB sounds way too complex for me....I'll stick with my pen and paper scribbles for a while longer!

Yuk to the weather and stuff but well done on eke-ing out another NSD!

What a horrendous day yesterday seems to have been. Poor you, and poor doggie. Absolutely amazingly brilliant resistance to the call of the caf!, though.

I can feel your horror at the power cut from here. :coffee: <- Hope this helps.
