Outstanding Balance Mistake???

Hi guys,
I just had a letter from my 'Debt company' asking for me to increase the payments I make to them, which they always seem to want to do.
I currently pay £80 a month but i agreed to £40 a while ago, just havent updated them, which im not going to but they always want it in writting that I will pay £80..
Anyway...
I had a letter today saying the following.
========================================
Account number:XXXXEtc Outstanding Balance: £40
Thank you for your recent payment of £40 on the 17th of September. Whilst this indicates your intention to repay this debt we do not appear to have a firm comittment in the form of a repayment pla.
Please use the tear of... Blah blah blah etc etc etc etc....
==================================================
==================================================
Right...
If you look at my 'Outstanding Balance' they have made a mistake, as my outstanding balance is around the £900 mark...
My question is, is there anyway I can send them a cheque for £40 and a note saying, this is my final repayment of the outstanding balance, along with a copy of the letter, or the original letter and some how clear my debt with them and only have to pay what they have asked for in that letter.
Or do I just have to accept they made a mistake?
Anyone know anything about this?

You could try, but I guess they (and you) also have previous letters which state the true balance so it'd be obvious that there'd just ben an error. I'd be surprised if it works..but good luck anyway.Resolution:

I thought that the o/s balance of £40 was because they were expecting £80, but only received your payment of £40 on 17/9.
£80 - £40 = £40
Have I misunderstood?0 -

You may have a point with that. I now pay £80 on that one account as I did have 2 accounts and paid £40 on each, now I still pay the same figure, just on the one. So maybe they are just asking for another £40 to be agreed? I will give it a little time before I get back to them as I should have been covered anyway with this one as I had this PPI and then became unemployed due to health and hsbc messed me about so now im paying a debt place. Try to sort it with that first, if that fails, I will try sending a copy with the £40 asked. Thanks guys.0
