Advice needed-recouped an underpayment but with NI bill - wouldnt have if paid right

Hi
Hoping someone can advise
My daughter worked at Halfords and due to changing stores she found herself working her contracted 16 hours but her timesheet showed 12.
She spoke with her manager who said it was OK and that things were right so she left it at that.
She left Halfords 2.25 years later and via another payroll query they realised that that she had only been paid for the 12 hours for all this time.
In fairness to Halfords they did refund her the money - almost £2600 - but as this all came in one month she got hit for Tax and National Insurance.
Tax - its a pain but she can claim that back later in the year
National Insurance though is gone - and its £116. Give shes only on £6.20 per hour thats over a weeks wages! Note that usually - unless she did masses of overtime which was rare - she did not pay any NI.
I know there is no way that she can get it back from the government - but does she have a claim against Halfords to recoup the £116 from them? She did raise it with a manager (albeit verbally so no records) or is it her fault as she should have questioned harder.
Look forwards to any words of wisdom and advice - Thanks in advance

There's another thread on here about a similar issue.
This post is particularly useful (and it was news to me!)

Thanks jobbingmusician - very interesting!
I will take a look and see if she can get the money back that way.
Cheers!0
