Monthly Season Ticket Refund Question

Options
Hi all

I'm on a 6th Month internship and it ends on April 8th

I've been buying monthly season tickets and the current is due to end on Feb 11.

I've got leave booked from Wed 15th Feb to Tuesday 21st Feb.

I'm debating moving the leave forward so I take it from Mon 13th Feb to Mon 20th, so my season ticket will start on the 20th Feb (Monday) instead of 13th Feb.

1:From looking at the National Rail terms of refunds I'm assuming the amount I'll be refunded for my final monthly season ticket isn't on how much time is left but what I've used? (so the 8th April my final day) So in effect the end date of the monthly ticket is irrelevant in terms of how much refund I would receive?

Any refund is calculated from the date the Season Ticket was handed in. It will be the difference between the price you paid and the cost of a ticket or tickets for the period for which you have actually used the ticket, plus an administration charge

2: However if I bought a monthly ticket on Mon 13th Feb, my final monthly ticket would expire on the 15th April. Would I still be eligible for a refund?

There must be at least seven days remaining on a Monthly Season Ticket or at least three days remaining on a 7 Day Season Ticket to obtain a refund

Thanks

Season tickets can be bought at the monthly rate for any period from one month to one year.

If I were you I would move my leave as you describe and buy a season ticket at the monthly rate starting on 20 Feb and ending on 8th April. Do you actually want to travel on Saturday 8th April? If not get that ticket ending on Friday 7th.

Far better than messing about with refunds - if you can find the money for that seven week ticket that is.

Too late for you now, but it is easy to get the best by using that feature in bold above.

For example, speaking generally, one could buy a five week ticket at the monthly rate starting on Monday 13 Feb and ending on Friday 17 March. The next five week ticket starts on the following Monday - thus avoiding paying for travel on every fifth weekend.
Factor in Bank Holidays and other absences similarly and the yearly cost could be less than an annual season ticket.

Buying a full month's ticket for less than a month and claiming a refund generally doesn't pay. If it did everyone would do it for a single journey in order to get a cheap ticket. They will charge you for the days you have used the ticket at the normal price of a ticket plus an admin fee so you will not save. You may as well have just bought the normal tickets in the first place. Better to buy weekly tickets for part of the month.
