Yoghurt for cooking

I am looking for an alternative (low cal) to cream in something like Chicken Tikka Masala but not sure which brand would be suitable. I sometimes use Elmlea, but am looking for something like crème fraiche/yoghurt etc.
Can anyone recommend anything?

Aldi big pots of Greek yoghurt is about 59p - fat free and full fat are both lovely, I've used both in cooking with no problems

    Thanks to both of you.
So, it is suitable for heating? It won't split - which is what I am really bothered about.

Creme Fraiche is less likely to split, full fat yogurt is better than low fat

  • Yoghurt will give the dish a sour taste.
    Use coconut cream instead.

Not in tikka masala it won't

Indeed the tikka marinade is made with yoghurt

Coconut cream will be far too rich and sweet, more suited to a Kashmiri chicken

It shouldn't if you stir it in at the end of cooking. Sometimes low fat versions can go a but funky in some recipes, the water seems to separate out more, but it should be fine stirred into your CTM.

Great to see the old style spelling! Even Waitrose seem to spell it "yogurt".

I too use yogurt in cooking and get the value low fat stuff and its fine in curries, especially if you have put too much flavouring in and its a bit too 'hot' I also use it with a dollop of lemon curd or jam or with diced up fruit See no point in those 'corner things as its cheaper to make your own version and add what you fancy to flavour it

If you are worried about yoghurt splitting mix a little cornflour thoroughly in it before adding.Similiarly if it does split mix cornflour and water add to the pan, stir well and it should come back together
