what a lovey idea
My suggestions
box one
book from charity shop
glass latte mug £1 from wilkos http://www.wilko.com/teapots+mugs/wilko-glass-latte-mug/invt/0316153
sachet hot chocolate (any supermarket)
marshmallows
box of luxury biscuits
box two
bath bomb / luxury bubble bath
scented candle
body lotion
mini bottle of wine
box three
HM brownies/cake
luxury marmalade/jam
small box/bar luxury chocolates
posh tea or coffee
(if coffee include some of those pots of cream you get from cafes)
box four (family night)
DVD
popcorn
popcorn holders http://www.poundland.co.uk/valentine-s-popcorn-holder-2-pack
family game eg monopoly/cludo (search in charity shops)
large bottle fizzy drink
If she is the kind of friend that will not be offended by charity shop buys then look out for other small items in them eg nice teapot to go with box three, bathroom ornament for box two etc.0 -

Do you remember the balsa wood contraptions with a little man at the top? He was threaded onto elastic and when you pushed the long bits of wood together he would do all sorts of contortions and eventually a head-over-heels. They are still sold and are great fun and an endless source of amusement:

My aunt has had very limited mobility for a couple of years now due to cancer, treatment and various complications. I have quite a scattergun approach, and often pick things up to send along.
I agree that most of it is the joy of receiving the package, so I like to send lots of little ones. DVDs from CEX/charity shops, interesting books, little bits of cool jewellery, a fancy colouring book, a glamorous fur hat (sale bargain!). Funny cards, lots of little things to try and brighten the day.0 -
Bottle of red, decent cheese. And don't forget yourself!0

When DD1 goes on expedition I try to put together a 'pamper package' for her to come home to. I buy a really nice smelling shower gel, a hair treatment conditioner, a face mask, a foot mask and some foot cream, a small hand cream, a foamy bath bomb and some new undies. She loves to come home to a tiny luxury after having spent 3 or 4 weeks living out of a rucksack third world!0
