Gas Permeable Contact Lenses

Options
Does anyone recommend a website where I can buy Gas Permeable contact lenses cheaply and how important information on things like astigmatism is?

All I have to go on is the strength of the lens but websites seem to want more information.

For GPs you really need the fit to be on pointe or you won't ever get used to the lenses and they could even cause damage.

If you have a current pair of RGPs an experienced lens fitter with excellent focimetry skills could use your old lenses to get the measurements but you'd really be better getting fitted by an optometrist or contact lens specialist dispensing optician for your first set at the very least.

The lenses aren't cheap but they can last a long time, minimum a year. I caution people that they WILL lose one in their first year as the little !!!!!!s like to jump when coming out.

You'll be fitted from a fitting set, basically a kit that opticians buy that contain the different base curves and diameters available but with no prescription in them.

ETA I have a pair of RGPs that are still looking brand new at 4 years old.

Unfortunately the fitting kits are not used to much due to risk of vCJD except for specialist keratonic fits. You would have to dispose of each lens used now which would be very expensive.

When I do one probably 2x a year I fit empirically and the manafactues give a 3 month FOC exchange so their is a bit of faffing around to get the initial fit.

Anyone wanting a first fit RGP would be nuts to go online these are custom made lenses that require not only the power , the curvature and the diameter as a minimum they all have different peripheral fits etc.

If an existing wearer I would suggest sending your current lens to the manafacuter to replicate.

RGP's are actually amazingly cheap they may cost £80-£100 initially for a set but I have people still wearing the same lenses 10 years later so £10 a year!.

Ordering RGPs online is much more risky than softs
  • Thanks. Given the prices online, to save £15 it is probably better to put up with the extra cost of a lens from the optician (£50 in total).

You cant buy these online, they need to be fitted or you will destroy your eye. They also cost a lot for top quality ones (400 quid) but the hybrid ones. Theyre awesome.

well seeing I'm out of community practice, the only people I see now have kerratoconus or really high prescriptions that can't be dispensed in the community, we use fitting kits cleaned in Milton of all things.

I paid for my recently £350 in BOOTS Sheffield, but my admit that BOOTH in Luton provided better service.
