    If you are a member of a Union they should be able to provide some basic advice ?

    I know what you mean, but unions cannot give advice any more than anyone else unless they are an IFA.

    They can help the OP find the relevant information in the scheme information.
    Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

    I think that you will find that ignorance of pensions is rife amongst the population in general.

    As I understand unions, most representatives are volunteers. Pensions are, as you know, not easy to understand so the level of help will very much depend on the representatives available.

    I suspect that in most workplaces knowledge about pensions from colleagues is best sought from those about a year from retirement who will have suddly shown some interest in the topic.

    For many, pensions = being old. They don't want to think about "being old".
