American Company Demanding Money

Hi,

Last year I was paying for a server I was renting in the USA. The monthly payments where paid a month up-front, yet when I cancelled they wanted me to pay for another month which I hadn't used, so I refused.

I today received a letter from an american company called AmerAssist demanding the total of $110.

Where do I stand with this?

What was in the "Terms & Conditions", did it say that you had to give another months notice? If it did I would just pay it if you can afford to.

How did you normally pay for your server? IF you owed anything surely the company should have charged you before you cancelled. Have you got a copy of the contract you agreed too when you took started renting the server?
I had this problem a few years back with a music site I used to run. I cancelled my hosting and they demanded that I paid for the bandwidth I had used and also for one months hosting. In my case it was about £40 and I just paid up as I couldnt be bothered with the hassle.

I have no idea if they have any legal way to reclaim the money if the company is american as surely it would fall under U.S law?

Sorry I could be any more help but I think its a case of check the contract

  • They claim they never received the cancellation letter, what a scam.

Totally agree with Davek - this is not enforceable under UK law in the SAME way as UK County Court Judgements have NO validity in America.
