Mortgage problems

Hi, please could you help with a problem my friend is having. She has discovered that her former partner took out several thousand pounds from their joint mortgage over the internet without her knowledge while they were in the process of splitting up last year. She has no access to the account on the internet herself. The company in question said that they could not deal with her (when she rang to find out how this could have happened without her consent) as she does not know the password. Her partner set up the on-line account and has never told her the information.

We cannot believe that there would not have been documents sent through the post to follow-up the transaction. Does anyone have any comments on this? Is it possible that her partner could have transferred money from the mortgage account to another account in his single name without the mortgage company contacting her? She thinks that he may have used the money as the down-payment on another property.

Any information would be helpful as she does not know what to do next.

My husband and I have different online passwords to our joint mortgage; I can easily do exactly what your friend's former partner did and transfer money from our joint offset mortgage straight to my single bank account, as can he.

I set up my online account months before him, so it is entirely possible that your friend's partner has done this and not given her access.

It is probably in the sign up terms that you agree to have online access separately.

Even if she can't speak to them about it (which I do find odd), they would only confirm what has happened.

Thankyou silvercar. Although this is not good news for my friend, at least she knows what has happened. My husband and I thought there might have been forged signatures involved.
