Daugther 12 birthday - what to do with little money

Hi

It is my daughters 12th birthday at the end of Oct, she has just started secondary school and has asked to do something for her birthday and wants to invite 6 friends. Normally she doesn't ask to invite so many friends round, but she has made some new friends at school and is anxious to invite them too. Problem is that I cannot have a sleepover for her until the end of Nov as husband is sturying frantically for accounting finals exams and needs all the sleep he can get. So I really wanted to try and do something on the Friday of the October half term, she could invite them to our house for the afternoon, even into the evening, so long as it had finished by 7-8pm. I can easily do food for them and do have a chocolate fountain which I can use and usually goes down well. But I am really worried about how to entertain them. Any suggestions? I don't want them to say that they are bored and my daugther get upset or embarrased. Finances are tight at the moment, so after budgeting for her present I calculate that I have around 30 pounds to spend in total for the party/friends round. Any suggestions please?

Thanks

  • Not sure if they are a bit young but how about a Hollywood glamour party??
All bring a fancy dress to wear and do each others hair and faces get dressed in there best dresses and then take a few digital snaps (or disposable camera pics if you dont have a digital camera) You could pick up a handful of feather boas cheap from wilkos or somewhere similar and let them all be superstars for the afternoon.
Im sure they would have a ball and have some pictures to treasure for ever.

Good luck im sure they will have a ball whatever you decided to do
  • Hiya
When it was my DD 12th birthday she had a few friends over and we turned the afternoon /eve in to a pampering session... doing nails, a few facials when we sent out homemade invites we did ask for parents consent, allergies etc.
    The time wizzed by.
It did help that Auntie B is a beautican!!

  • Hi how about local swim bath for afternoon home for hot dogs, chocolate fountain or how about a belly buster-Cheap cheerful icecream mixed with haribo, chocolate buttons, marshmellows any other sweets 3 mars bars melted add a little cream and pour on top.Did I say this all goes in one big bowl and its a spoon each and go for it.:rotfl: Sparklers can be used instead of candles.Rent a couple girly dvds throw in some popcorn lemonade and fruit juice spritzers. Party gifts check out charity shops for small cuddlies and bath stuff even bid girls like a qute teddy.

I'd think at that age they'd be happy with a High School musical dvd and plenty of space for dancing!
My OH's daughter turns 12 next month too and her mother is pressing for OH to take them all to Alton Towers, 14 kids in total!!! The daughter would be just as happy with some friends round, dvds, chocolate and face masks. And it would be about a tenth of the price - so guess which we're doing!

  • Great ideas, thanks. I am going to sit down and suggest these to my dauther and see what she likes the idea of. High School Musical is always a hit, she informed me after school today that nearly everyone that she knows watched it on Friday night, boys as well (although they all had some reason why they were forced to, lol!) And we taped it too, so that's handy!

Thankfully she is really good and doesn't mind if we don't spend loads of money, she just wants to have some fun with her friends, shame that her older sister doesn't think like that! Thanks for your help
  • Hi
If you go for the High school musical theme Asda have just started a range of birthday cakes, fairy cakes etc with that theme you could always add these to hot dogs, popcorn etc and make it a real american type theme.

  • Just had nother thought if you have space and dont mind a bit of mess you could make your own Pinyata (not sure of spelling:o ) I did this for DD a couple of years ago so sucessful DS insisted on one and he was 15.
This is not your flimsy hit it with a feather pinyata Oooooooooo no!:rotfl:
Take one beach ball or giant balloon cover in vasaline and make paper mache just like you did at school torn news paper dipped in wallpaper paste try to use 2 diffrent coloure news paper if poss,1st go top to bottom leave a 5cm sq gap at top (so you can pop things in) let dry then second lot paper top to bottom bu accross (hope that makes snce:rolleyes: ) do this 2or 3 times more. When dry burst ballon/ball and add small packs of sweets small bxs smarties, love harts, haribo , mini malteesers, choc buttons ect and some confetti coloured shreeded paper will do cut up fine.cover hole.Paint with bright poster paints add glitter ect. Will require a string or ribbon hammock tied at top to support it must be faily strong.Find a nice safe spot on the day ahd hang it up (we hung it from a washing line it was a dry day) give birthday girl a nice long stick, blindfold her turn her arround a couple of time and shout out directions,oh forgot grownups were ear deffenders:rotfl: Give a time limit of about 30 seconds to each girl same process but make sure they are very dizzy befor trying to hit it.Then DD gets last go with blindfold and stick no turning round just guidance and let her beat it untill it splits.Free for all:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I made ours with about 7 layers so not compleatly dry an day of party inside was plyable.Made for more fun as it needed beating to death kids loved it.
Also that year OH used some racking from his shed puttin protective sheeting arround it we bought lots of bits of china from car boot and set it up gave children 3 old cricket balls took in turn to smash the china (adults only retriving the balls and replacing the china) lots of screams and shouts kids loved it.You have no idea how much teenagers love organised vandalisum.
Nighbers thought OH and I had had a fall out :rotfl: came round to see if they could help and begged to have a go :rotfl: :rotfl:

  • Sat down and suggested these ideas to my daugther this morning and she loved them. She is really looking forward to doing this, we have decided that to go to Basingstoke on Sat to see what we can find for party bags, (teddy idea went down well, and maybe a bath bomb each) and also have a look for card etc to make her invitations. So thank you! I think that we are both really going to enjoy doing this together.

A thought or two, if you don't mind! :-)

For inexpensive food: get the girls to make their own individual pizzas - choosing toppings.

There are kits (inexpensive) for the girls to make their own perfume concoctions and soaps, which your daughter's guests could take home as their party favour.

    Have a great time.
