Your views on employment . What does the future hold ?

not really a cheerful topic , but a realistic one.
I've just seen a topic on the BBC news website , about whether it's a good idea to change jobs every 3 years or so .
We all have various issues one way or another I guess .

My outlook: lived in London and greater London all my life until very recently , where I relocated to Dorset . Unskilled/ manual office worker ,who has been less than a year unemployed since leaving school in '79.

Scared that my line of work , is getting harder to find in a friendly environment I don't hold much faith in the future . Robots and globalisation have made a severe dent in the working environment .
As for places like sports direct and boo hoo, the less said about that the better .
I've always been a plodder . Then I got pigeonholed so to speak, where if I wanted to go for something else , those positions were never there and the job I did was all that was available.
When I was young and growing up in the workplace , you could expect jobs for years . Those days have gone haven't they ??
My solution( as I'm alone and single) , is to temp or go part time .
I'm recovering from an illness and given myself a few months off.
I'm lucky that I can ( just ) afford to do that for now .

What are your views of the future ?

Well personally I don't think it's a good idea to change jobs every 3 years. I've only been where I am around 3 years and I've worked hard to do get to the salary I am happy with. It would be like starting all over again.

I'll admit I handed my notice in a couple times but that was to go and do the same thing for more money. This prompted them on both occasions to review the salaries for my role and make a counter offer.

I'll also say that while I have been here I have "changed jobs" twice already too. I started on Reception, a year later I trained in payroll, 6 months into that I took part of the Office Manager's roles while she went on maternity and now she's back I'm full time payroll again.

I think as opposed to looking for whole new jobs and leaving your employer if you can help it, I would try and find a new job in your current place of work if you can. At least then you don't have to worry so much about security and the "2 year rule" thing all the time.

In terms of the future, could a robot do payroll? Yes I am sure it could as long as the hours were input into some kind of program which then processed the payments etc. For the most part it could be pretty much automated, but it just wouldn't have that human element to it that we are well renowned for.
  • All strength of mind. When a council proudly boasts in today's market, "it's always recruiting", that's when you really know jobs aren't for life and we're in a throw away employment culture. (Both sides)

Bit shocked to learn that for just over 14k job with the pure benefit of not working shifts/late hours, they said out of 100+ who attended assessments, they arranged 30 interviews from the 'people who answered' afterwards out of which 7 showed up. Though I remember when I went through my interview, I left the room thinking I could do anything so maybe all wasn't lost. I'd never have believed how it ended. (Did I waste time, would I be where I am today if it hadn't happened etc)

if you can find any strength from temping then do - you may hit lucky and get a workplace with different ages, cultures, strengths, weaknesses etc. Just treat it as a test the water and see. What's one person's idea of hell may be another's great. It goes back to why some places do you settle in (if ever) compared to some you just don't.

The only person who can change this is you..read the above ..Ok your line of work might be drying up but you really cannot change that as it is out of your control.. Now there must be parts of your previous job that you can use for other employment of a slightly different nature or even use to become self employed? Stop being a 'plodder' if you expect results x

When one Door closes another opens.....
I've had a few fixed term contracts and I feel I learnt way more than others in permanent jobs who've been there for years.
