Scam nuisance call from anti nuisance call company?

We have the telephone preference thing activated which is why I was surprised just now when, for the first time in about a year, our landline rang.

The call was from someone in a very noisy - presumably Indian - call centre. He appeared to have a lot of details like my address and name and was claiming that I needed to verify my details to continue the block.

He went through things like is this your name and address? (it was) - do you pay for this service by direct debit, which tbh I don't know as my wife set it up. He then wanted to know if the card I registered with expires next year. I said I didn't know (again I didn't set any of this up, my wife did) and he became very insistent that I find out so I could say yes or no and verify my identity continue the block.

At that point I became suspicious and hung up. I said they should write to me.

Anyone know if this was legit? I am a bit concerned this company / scam had so many of my details if it wasn't.

I very much doubt it was the TPS calling you, just a scammer trying to extract money.

They just called again. Someone else from what sounded like an Indian based call centre who insisted that no one else had contacted me. I put the phone down this time.

Of course it's a scam. The TPS is free so anyone asking for a payment is a scammer.

Had the same call this afternoon, started by asking if we had received nuisance calls and knew my name. Put the phone down and added the number to my call blocker, I also have TPS.
Number was 01524644444 just googled and plenty of entries.

No idea what the number was. Our landline handset is basically a decoration so the broadband dongle doesn't get lonely.

They didn't get to the point of asking for money, I was concerned about the amount of information they had about me though, and where they got it from.

Anyone making a nuisance call to promote anything to do with blocking nuisance calls is a scammer.

Report the call to ICO. Several such firms have already been penalised.

TPS is free but it only has an effect on stopping marketing calls from genuine companies. It has no effect on calls from criminals and scammers.

Ironically enough, they probly got your number from the TPS register.

Companies are obliged to screen their outgoing call list against the TPS list to make sure they dont call anyone on it.
However it seems that this bogas company are using it as a dialling list.

    Very clever .... and evil
