Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of writing a book at the moment on the low paying side of the British economy. It's got a publisher and will be coming out some time in 2018.

I'm looking to speak to anyone who has worked in a call centre, ideally in the South Wales area (though it doesn't have to be there). I want to talk about what it's like - pros and cons of the job etc.

If you think you might be able to help me I'd be really grateful to hear from you. Even if you're still working there you won't get into any trouble - I'm using pseudonyms when the people I talk to request it for just that reason.

Thanks. Happy to provide a bit more info on request.

James

You need permission to make this sort of request.

Your title says 'Wales' - May I suggest that it is corrected to 'Welsh'.
  • Ok. Who should I seek permission from?

From the gods, the powers that be.

The board guides might be a start.

You may talk to me for £10 an hour.
  • And why would a Welsh call centre be any different??

Of course by 2018 everything you've written could be classed as history.

Actually I think it would need to be the forum team rather than individual board guides.

Blimey James I hope you come up with better pseudonyms than Arthur Seaton.

Yes the forum team not the board guides.

    Thanks.
  • I don't think I'll be lining up to buy your book but I worked in a contact centre in Wales when my son was young. It was my first step back into work after taking time off to be a Mum. I went through a really thorough and enjoyable induction and training programme, started as a part-time Agent taking inbound calls working evenings and weekends and really enjoyed my work.

I progressed through a number of roles, gaining in knowledge, experience and confidence as I did and built a very successful career, fully supported by my employer and my family. I was well paid, recognised and valued for the job I did and went on to win a national Contact Centre award.

I only posted this as I feel your post has an air of negativity about it. Not all contact centres are sweat-shops where agents are chained to their headsets and not allowed a loo break. My contact centre employment gave me the knowledge, skills and confidence to progress to a number of high level roles since, and now to run my own successful business.

Just wanted to remind you that there are two sides to every story and to share a positive side to the story. I'm sure the reason you're asking about contact centres in Wales is because we do the job better than anyone else :-)
