Car Allowance - is it better to salary?

I work in an organisation where a lot of people have company cars but when I started was given a car allowance. I realise if I had a company car I would lose this allowance and would also be taxed extra on the company car benefit so doesn't seem worthwhile looking into that at the moment. My question is is it worth having…

Can I just add that years ago I did exactly this - I simply asked my employer to remove car allowance and add to salary and they agreed - result increased pension contributions from myself and employer and pay increases based on higher salary - you don't ask you don't get
