DBS for doing supply work in nurseries

If you wanted to do supply work in nurseries but not through an agency eg. Contacting local nurseries and asking of you can do supply work for them, how would you go about getting a DBS if you can only get one through a company or an agency?

You cant basically, they will have contracts in place to get supply from agencies who carry out these checks.

Reputable ones probably wouldn't do it because of the DBS issue, and the ones that do may well be operating illegally.

If they have staff directly employed then they would probably have a company which is registered to deal with the DBS who would let them know that the DBS didn't have any areas of concern or did. The actual certificate is sent to the subject who would then be expected to show it to the nursery manager (who should probably make a copy of the top bit and keep it until their next Ofsted inspection, after which it should be destroyed). The company would charge the nursery and the nursery would charge you.
  • It's the employer who needs to request it, so if they wanted you they would sort it. They might ask you to pay however.

I volunteer at a nursery, they sent me a link to do the DBS check - I needed to fill in things such as name, address, previous address and DOB. There is no charge for DBS checks for volunteer work.

I take it that you have a Level 2 or 3 in a childcare related qualification or relevant experience? If not you are not much use to a nursery as there is lots you will not be able to do such as changing nappies, being left alone with the child amongst other things.

If you have the experience or qualifications then you might be able to get some casual work at a nursery, for example a zero hours contract and they will call you when they need cover.
