When I took my a mortgage out in December 1992 I was told by the building society that I had to have their insurance but it was very very expensive but I did as I was told as I'd just come back from America and needed the mortgage. Can I claim it back?

Do you mean Buildings and Contents ?
Many banks/building societies pushed this back then and YES is was more expensive than shopping around.
You can get cheaper Buildings and Contents from moneysupermarket, compare the mercat, gocompare, uswitch etc
You can do the same for life assurance0 -
