claiming tax relief - first time

Hi all,
From September last year (2016) up until this month - I was working as a mobile carer - using my own car to travel around. I was covering approximately 100 - 150 miles a WEEK* and got no mileage allowance from the company.
How do I claim some of this back? I'll require a "for dummies" step-by-step guide as I'm pretty clueless.
Thank you
Katie

Where you working on an employed or self employed basis?0

If you are an employee and your claim is more than £2500 you will have to register for and file a self assessment once the tax year ends.
If you are an employee and your claim is for less than £2500 you can claim on a P87 form which can be completed via the Gov.uk website. Alternatively you can submit an online claim via the Personal Tax Account.
You can claim tax relief on 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, then 25p per mile thereafter, less any contribution/mileage payment paid by your employer.
If you are self employed then you will claim the cost of travel/transport as part of the expenses you claim against your turnover and show this on your self assessment tax return[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

note - you do not claim the mileage rate, you get tax relief. Did you pay tax in the job? (there have been previous carers that did not earn enough to pay tax in the year so are unable to claim back what has not been paid)
If you have been doing 150 business miles for 5 months then you would be potentially due a refund of £67.50 if you were a 20% tax payer, £135 if a 40% taxpayer and £0 if non-taxpayer0 -

I was doing approximately 100 miles a week, and was earning around £1100 a month after tax. Was paying tax, and spending around £160-£180 a month on petrol.
Any more clarification?0 -
Whether it's worth you claiming depends on any other income you have had in the same tax year.
If no other income probably pointless to claim as you'd be entitled to all your tax back anyway and the expenses wouldn't change this.
If taxable income is over £11000 this tax year then it would be different0
