Just looking for other people's experiences with claiming their state pension.Hubby has deferred now for over a year and we wish to claim it in the new tax year,.around the second week of April.
How much notice is it advisable to give, and what have people found the best and easiest way to claim, online or by phone?
Thanks in advance for any tips on making the experience as easy as possible.
Also when is best to call the tax office and let them know ,as he already receives a private pension and will pay tax in the new tax year,so I want to give him my marriage allowance.

Advice on here previously indicated that 8 weeks will be about right so prob best to start the claim in the next couple of weeks .
I claimed my SP on line and there were no issues (received last week) , wife deferred in June 13 and intends to receive it in August this year so will start the claim in June .0 -
I claimed mine over the phone. Online required a delay whilst the government gateway validated me (despite already having validated for HMRC) and I got a new number to boot.
Over the phone was easy, though you need NI number and bank
details to hand. I also needed to know my husband's NI number. They also wanted a payroll number from my last employment, so an old payslip is a good idea to have handy. They were very helpful.
I was told the amount of pension based on standard info, but that the lump sum v enhanced pension would be calculated by a different department. I was rather expecting that the standard pension would be paid straightaway, but no, nothing has appeared in my bank account. Presumably I need to wait for the deferral figure (old rules).0 -

Regarding the Tax , I went online last week ( my gateway account) and it already showed my new State Pension along side my private pension together with the new tax code (2016/17) and tax estimate for 2017/18 .
Also included new tax code from that date to reflect new higher personal allowance of £11500 .0 -
Froglet I'm in the same situation but slightly ahead of you. I claimed mine online last week, to start from 6th April. Spoke with HMRC who said no need to worry as DWP advise them automatically and they will adjust PAYE codes accordingly.
If you are passing over some of your allowance, I would have thought no harm in getting on with that now.The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Thanks all of you.I have just finished work and HMRC said they would sort out the allowance and set me up with a new code, whilst transferring my allowance over.I don't get my pension until July and have a very small private pension already.A lot to sort out as I understand how tax works so hubby just lets me speak to them.I do prefer speaking to a human, you can't ask a computer questions . !0
