p45 question

Hi

I have just received my P45. I have had another P45 in this current tax year also. I thought my 2nd (latest) p45 would have my total pay to date? It only shows amount earned in this employment and doesn't include what I earned in my first p45.

is this correct.?

so my earnings to date will be the two p45s added together?

Thanks

I assume that item 6 the tax code has an X following it. This indicates that your employer was using a non-cumulative tax (also called week 1 or month 1)code for you. Could be several reasons for this but if a non-cumulative code is on the P45 then there will be no entry for total pay and tax to date.
Totals to date will be the totals from the two P45 part 1As assuming no other taxable income or benefits, eg jobseekers.

thanks and sorry for the late reply.

if I get another job before April and provide the p45 to my new employer, they won't know my total for this year when producing my p60? Is that right? Do I give my new employer both p45s? what are the reasons for non cumulative tax codes

    thanks

Most common reason for a non-cumulative tax code is that the employer has not received a P45 and is using the emergency tax code. Can also be because the P45 from last employer was non-cumulative or HMRC have issued it as they do not have full earnings details about you or they have reduced your tax code and applying it on a cumulative basis part way through the tax year would result in a large tax deduction, or you have requested HMRC not to giver a new employer your earnings details.
All you can do is hand in your last P45 to your next employer or Jobcentre if you are on umemployment benefit. If HMRC have your full details they will advise these to your next employer but if they do not get there in time for the tax year end or they are not able to issue them then your P60 will not include pay and tax details before the start of that employment.
