They could have saved about £30 each by buying advance returns for the whole trip.
Advance fares for the whole trip in 4 weeks time cost £112.60 for the return journey, from the CrossCountry website.I wasn't guessing. I posted those comments after looking up fares in 3 or 4 weeks time, assuming that similar prices might have been available for today that much time ago.
That may not be precise, but it seems a reasonable chance.
Trainsplit - the website used by the football supporter in question - will sell tickets for a grand total of £58.69 for the return trip.
