Hybrid Mountain Bike Tyres

My bike tyres are marked 26 X 1.85. These tyres are difficult to get and far more expensive than the more common 26 X 1.95.
Will the bigger tyre fit and be safe ?
Many thanks

Safety is not an issue, it's just a matter of maximum tyre size for the frame. If there is plenty of clearance on the existing tyres then it should not be a problem, but if the clearance is tight, go down a size instead.
What model of bike do you have?0 -
25 year old Vampire, nice bike just haven't used much in last 10 years, tyres have perished and want to get back to riding for exercise0

Where are you planing to ride the bike? On road you need smooth tyres around 26×1.5, for offroad for a bike that age you are looking for the widest knobbly tyres that fit - probably 26×1.95 or 26×2.0. Check how much clearance you have around your current tyres.0

On road you don't need smooth tyres, you can ride fine, perhaps even more safely with some grip for wet weather (I ride a CAADX with 700x35 nobbly tyres on road in winter when I'm not on my normal 25c slicks - weather depending)
OP yes a 1.95 should be fine, take it to a bike shop who can check them before you buy or chance it online - the 1.85 / 1.95 is just tyre width - if your inflated tyre has loads of clearance front and back it should be ok
Alternatively why not drop to 1.75 e.g. the below

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

I replaced 1.85 tyres with 1.95 tyres on an old Specialized bike and it works just fine although the extra rolling resistance is obvious and a pain.0
