Just thought would mention at my dentist today and given another prescription for Duraphat was on 5000, but now on 2800, took straight to chemist.
It is only toothpaste that does not cause bad stinging on skin/membrane in mouth.

There is no high fluoride toothpaste available over the counter. It is only available by NHS or private prescription.

One other point is that children's tooth pastes have low concentrations of fluoride. So children should be using a child's toothpaste up to three and then using adult toothpaste. Also if an adult is using a child's toothpaste because they like the taste they should be aware that there is not enough fluoride to be clinically effective.

Is this actually true? I know my kids use a children's one with 1450 ppm and I've just checked the Tesco website - all of the children's toothpastes I could see are the same, with the exception of baby toothpastes (0-2years) which are 1000 ppm.

Sorry should have made it clear that toothpastes for under three year olds such as milk teeth etc should be stopped at age three as they do not have enough fluoride for older children .

This used to be the case with all children's toothpastes but some manufacturers have now increased the fluoride content of many, but not all, children's toothpastes e.g. Boots children's toothpastes often only have 1000ppm

http://www.sompar.nhs.uk/media/2716/oral-health-information-for-children-and-babies-final-290116.pdf 1450ppm fluoride is recommended for 3 years and above . This is an excellent resource on children's dental care

Thanks, I was worried I'd misunderstood something and was using 'bad' toothpaste for the kids!
