Paying too much tax

I have 2 jobs and I think I'm paying too much tax on my main job. I started in August and in my first month I paid BR tax, the next 3 months after that my tax code was 710T and for the past 2 months it's been 549T. I don't understand why my tax code keeps changing and I'm concerned I'm paying too much.

  • You need to contact HMRC, only they will know why the tax code has been changed.

Phone them on 0300 200 3300 . I've always found them very helpful and they've changed my tax codes as necessary immediately.

You should have had a P2 coding notice with each change of tax code which explains the basis for the change, what do they say? If you haven't have them, check that HMRC have the correct address for you.

Looks like they have split your tax free amount between your two jobs, you can request they change this back so that you have no tax free earnings on your second job and use all of your allowance on your main job.

How much do you earn each year in your 'main' job and how much in your 'other' job? If each job is less than (roughly) £11000 per year then splitting your tax code between jobs is worth doing. If one is more than that, then you'd usually have a code of 1100L on that, and the other would normally be BR.

Cutting Tax board is good for this kind of question.

I would just add that as there have been tax code changes it is possible that you are currently on a non-cumulative tax code for one or both jobs. This may mean your total tax at year end is not correct. If you want to know your current tax position you do need to give full details. From last payslips van you advise taxable gross to date, tax paid to date, week/month number and tax code. When you advise tax code check what follows it eg 1, 0, Cumulative, non-cumulative, X.
