leaving a house behind must have some Costs from that
If you have loads of the £3k left why are you bothering with packing and a van use a firm to do it all.
I tried a different approach policies of public bodies have them on line.
Here is one that has some examples(try a few more)

IN.
Carpets, curtains etc. if old ones are unsuitable for new house (in excess of funds received from selling of unsuitable goods)
White domestic goods if previously fitted
OUT
Items for second homes
Decorating materials
Gardening materials
Kitchen equipment e.g. toaster, kettle etc.
Linen/bedding items
Furniture
being OUT does not mean they are definitely not allowed for TAX but is a good hint.
Remember your new employer can still pay for stuff if they want just becomes taxable.0 -

I realise I could just get a firm to do it all, but as my ex is staying in the house there was a lot of sorting of possessions to be done, and I'm not taking any furniture so it seemed a lot easier to do it myself.
I'm now off to choose a microwave. Thank you for all the help!0 -

On the other hand, it might earn you some brownie points with your new employer if you don't claim the full allowance.0 -
On the assumption that you would be buying kettle, TV etc etc anyway, pass the receipts on to your employer and let them decide. If they choose not to pay for these, you've lost nothing as you would be buying them anyway.
I don't think brownie points work like that - if they've offered £3,000 and you don't take it all (if you need it all) they'll just think you're daft.No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0
